| Pediatric Hematology Research course |
The course is being offered by the Graduate School of Health Sciences, University of Aarhus, November 8-10, 2010.
Criteria for participation: University degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students).
Aim: To provide students with knowledge on the hot topics within pediatric benign hematology and mainly leukemia/leukemia and present some of the potential areas of further research.
Contents: Before 1950, childhood leukemia was not differentiated into acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A diagnosis of childhood leukemia was uniformly fatal within an average period of less than three months. Over the last half century a dramatic changes in the understanding of the pathogenesis of leukemia and the treatment possibilities resulting in cure rates above 80%. We still have a lot to learn about the molecular biology, identification of the good and poor risk patients for whom therapy should be adjusted, the pharmacokinetics, acute and chronic side effects.
The course will focus on modern hematologic cancer research and how advances into these areas can be used to define, model and target the underlying genetic cause of these diseases. The course will cover underlying disease mechanisms and modern treatment concepts. A number of experts will discuss the recent progress within their own specific areas and how these may be used therapeutically. Moreover, key papers will be discussed.
Format: A mixture of lectures by invited speakers and journal clubs (presented by the participating students). The duration of the course is three days (24 hours). Students are expected to use 24 hours for preparation.

Course Fee: D.kr. 5000,- Participation in the course is without cost for PhD students, research-year students as well as lecturers and professors in DK with documented need for participation owing to supervisory duties regarding PhD students. PhD students from other Nordic countries may be considered for participation. Individuals involved in pediatric hematology research outside a PhD program may be considered for participation if space available.
The cost covers participation, food and beverage during the course, and one night in single room or two nights in a double room at the conference hotel.
